MARCH OF DIMES & RELAY FOR LIFE CARNIVAL
Moose Lodge Davis Fire Station
601 E. South Street 602 N Stanton Street
Freeport, IL 61032 Davis, IL 61019
Job Description: I painted children’s faces at both the Relay for Life Carnival Fundraiser in Freeport and the March of Dimes annual spaghetti dinner in Davis. Both of these events were for children to enjoy fun games, win prizes, and have a good time. Except the March of Dimes dinner was also a benefit for premature babies. My job was to entertain the kids by talking and interacting with them. I also had to come up with designs and patterns that could be painted on the kids’ faces.
Skills: To be able to do this job successfully, I had to be able to communicate with the children. I asked the kids what they wanted on their face and while painting their faces, I made small conversation with them just to make the time seem to go faster. Also, I had to be able to think of designs to paint on their faces in a quick amount of time. This skill, generating ideas, came in handy because many kids came up to the table and wanted special symbols or designs painted on them.
Insight: Painting faces is always an interesting, but exhausting job. I got to meet so many kids throughout the day, and even got to know some of them pretty well. By entertaining the kids, I got my hours of community service, but also had a good time so it didn’t feeling like I was doing community service. Putting a smile on the kids’ face for such a small deed felt good. Doing a small volunteer job can make a difference in someone’s life.
